Advanced Life Support
Advanced life support (ALS) consists of invasive life-saving procedures, including the placement of advanced airway adjuncts, intravenous infusions, manual defibrillation, electrocardiogram interpretation, and much more.
ALS may also include specialty care, critical care, and Mobile Intensive Care (MICU), all of which are offered by Care First EMS. Some of the procedures and equipment that are included in these levels of care are:
- Ventilator: a machine that generates a controlled flow of gas into a patient’s airways. Oxygen and air are received from cylinders or wall outlets. The gas is pressure-reduced and blended according to the prescribed inspired oxygen tension (FiO2), accumulated in a receptacle within the machine, and delivered to the patient using one of many available modes of ventilation.
- IV Drip: the continuous introduction of a solution intravenously, a drop at a time
- High-end monitor systems, pulse rate examination, heart monitoring, monitoring of oxygen and absorption levels, and cardiac pacing.
